“We've listened and heard many of the deep and long-running concerns and obstacles underrepresented groups face when pursuing outdoor adventure. Enjoying and appreciating nature is important for health and mental well-being and should be welcoming places for everyone. THOR is committed to helping advance outdoor equity and inclusion, so all feel welcome to Go Everywhere and Stay Anywhere.”

Bob Martin - President and CEO, THOR

The Together Outdoors Coalition provides a cross-sector collaborative learning space for outdoor recreation manufacturers, retailers, service providers, land managers, grassroots organizations, and other stakeholders to advance inclusion and diversity throughout the recreation economy. People of Color, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and marginalized people of various backgrounds, faiths, and abilities comprise a disproportionately low number of those who enjoy the outdoors and there are steps we can take together to create a more inclusive and welcoming user experience and informed and educated business interface with the consumer.

We know that this work isn’t easy. Through collaboration we can move the industry towards a more inclusive future that invigorates the benefits of diversity, public health, environmental advocacy, and economic development. We look forward to supporting your organization, business or agency at any stage of your learning process.

Our current efforts include:

  • Multi-session education program focused on various DEI topics relevant to the outdoors.

  • The development of interactive JEDI/DEI resource library for members that we're launching in July 2022.

  • Logo/branding campaign dedicated to promoting the outdoors as a welcoming space.

  • A Slack channel to keep members updated with the work of Together Outdoors, DEI related news and resources, and connect with other members of the coalition.

Commitment

By joining Together Outdoors, commits to following the Together Outdoors Community Agreements and coalition meetings.

  • Approach our work together with humility, openness, and willingness to be vulnerable and uncomfortable.

  • Enter our conversations with the understanding that everyone in the room has knowledge, wisdom, and experiences that are valuable to learning and to our collective purpose.

  • Be respectful and courteous to all coalition members.

  • Make generous assumptions about people and assume good intent.

  • Ask for help when needed.

  • Accept advice and feedback as an opportunity for growth.

Engagement Agreement

As a member of this unique coalition, you are adding your voice and abilities to the effort to make the great outdoors great for everyone. Below you will find a statement of our purpose and an outline of your commitments as a Together Outdoors coalition member.

 Engagement

  • Each coalition member should appoint a representative to actively participate in bimonthly coalition meetings and take what they learn back to the organization.

  • All coalition members must have completed a signed engagement agreement form which signifies their commitment to advancing the mission, vision, and objectives of Together Outdoors.

  • Coalition members have access to Together Outdoors staff and other members as a resource to help aid their organization’s specific DEI journey.

Action

  • Coalition members are encouraged to set goals within their organization to invest in community partnership and outreach programs, including Together Outdoors, that improve access to the outdoors.

  • Coalition members are encouraged to include goals and benchmarks for organization-wide learning and advancement of diversity, equity and inclusion priorities in the strategic planning processes. As part of this commitment, engage their senior leadership to champion these educational and programmatic initiatives.

  • Coalition members are encouraged to self-report their organization’s inclusion efforts and strategies to share Together Outdoors lessons on an annual basis

    • This report may be included in the company or group’s annual report. Organizations that issue Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reports may include this information in the “Social” section.

Coalition Experience

We use a module-based system augmented with Zoom sessions, field-based learning, and practicum to create a robust and immersive learning journey for Coalition Members. The Together Outdoors approach is focused on three tenets, which are as follows:

  • Coalition Members treat the learnings of the program as an integral aspect to their professional skill set and expertise, much like any other training they would encounter on the job. Participants will examine their own histories, knowledge, and ideas about inclusive outdoor recreation through education that offers frequent reflection and actionable learning.

  • Coalition Members will have frequent opportunities to interact with one another, ask questions, and share unique perspectives based on their organization’s geography, recreational activity, local history, and mission. As a collective we possess more knowledge than any one individual. To make this possible, Together Outdoors will create a culture of curiosity, engagement, and humility.

  • Coalition Members will consistently be exposed to case studies from the field to connect theories to implementation and consider opportunities for improvement.
